Transforming Brain-dead Time
Did you know that if you put earphones under your ear protection, that you can listen to a whole podcast while mowing your lawns? What better use could there be for that otherwise brain-dead time? I also listen to podcasts while I’m driving, walking and showering (hot tip: waterproof Bluetooth speakers are less than ten quid). Podcasts are a really enjoyable way to keep you occupied and learning when you are otherwise restricted doing a monotonous activity that doesn’t require much concentration. Doing so makes me look forward to these types of activities that I otherwise regard as wasted time. With that in mind, I have three podcast recommendations for you.

The Tim Ferriss Show
For those that haven’t heard of Tim Ferriss, he has become something of a cult following. He has published a range of books including the New York Times Bestseller The 4 Hour Work Week – the book that probably had the most impact on my now obsessive interest in business.
The Tim Ferriss Show has two types of episodes. The first are Tim’s musings and teachings either on his own or with his friends, which I have never really listened to. The second type is the gold dust, these are interviews with what Tim describes as ‘world class performers’ from fields as far apart as obstacle course racing to bio-chemistry. It is a long format show so some of the interviews go for more than two hours. What makes these interviews both unique and fascinating, is that Tim tries to unpack the habits, rituals and behaviours that these highly successful people employ to stay at the top of their game.
There are more than 300(!!) episodes, so I recommend you start with the episodes below in the order listed. I guarantee they will entertain you, surprise you, make you laugh and sometimes move you emotionally. But even better than being great entertainment, they are amazing learning resources. This is your opportunity to be mentored by the best.
- Episode 60: Arnold Schwarzenegger
- Episode 225: John Crowley
- Episode 145: Cal Fussman
- Episode 293: Catherine Hoke
- Episode 287: Terry Crews
- Episode 106: Scott Adams, the man behind Dilbert
- Episode 163: Marc Andreessen
- Episode 124: Jamie Foxx
- Episode 301: Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Air BnB
- Episode 229: Ricardo Semler
- Episode 221: Mr Money Mustache
This is a fun podcast that provides a compelling narrative using insider accounts of the commercial wars between big competitors. Each series has between five and seven episodes. The featured battles include Waze vs Apple Maps, the Browser Wars (Microsoft vs Mosaic vs Netscape), Red Bull vs Monster, Napster vs the record labels and McDonalds vs Burger King.
I recommend you start with the Blockbuster vs Netflix series.

The RFK Tapes
This potentially explosive series takes a close look at the murder of Robert Kennedy. RFK’s murder is widely seen as an open and shut case, witnessed by many with nothing to substantiate a conspiracy theory – unlike his brother’s murder. However, this series exposes a bunch of inconsistencies that most people did not know existed and explores several lines of enquiry to see if there was really more than one person involved in RFK’s assassination – and therefore whether there was a conspiracy or not. The best episodes are towards the start.
